Horses and Hope: Esme's Story

Every horse has a story, and this is the story of Esme.
Esme
Horses and Hope calendar: August 2014
Esme is a 10-year-old registered Morgan. This beautiful, well-bred mare was raised on a farm that obviously knew how to produce quality horses; however, things got a little out of hand there and while the horses were well fed, they were not handled. At all. Some situations changed, and part of the herd ended up at a rescue in western Maryland. Finding good homes for trained horses is challenging and for untouched horses, it's nearly impossible. Fortunately, there was someone out there for Esme - Hilltop Farm’s office manager and photographer Erin McCardell also rides and trains, and was more than up to the challenge presented by this fiery mare.
Esme

Erin tells of the day she met Esme: “I got her from a rescue as a completely unhandled 6-year-old. When I went out to look at her the first time, they chased her into the ring through a series of gates so I could watch her move. When she took it upon herself to not only show off marvelously, but also to jump the jumps that were in the ring, I decided I definitely wanted her.”
Esme
Esme
The first couple years with Erin were spent catching up and learning all the things that horses need to know that we often take for granted, like leading, longeing, riding in a trailer, and having manners for the farrier and vet. Once that was mastered, these two never looked back. They’ve gone camping, competed successfully in dressage and Conditioning Distance Rides, and they’re gearing up for longer endurance rides. Erin hopes to have done a 50-miler by the time you're looking at this calendar page in August 2014.

Whenever I meet up with Erin and Esme for a ride or a photo session, I'm so impressed with their progress. With Erin's patient training and guidance, Esme has blossomed into a confident and bold athlete. A mare with this much energy and intelligence could be a real handful for the wrong rider, but she and Erin are a perfect match. And the camera loves her- she's one of the most beautiful horses I've ever met.

Coming soon! 2014 Horses and Hope calendar!
Esme's story is one of the many featured in the 2014 Horses and Hope calendar. With the help of Gina Keesling of HoofPrints, the 2012 and 2013 Horses and Hope calendars featured stories and photos of hundreds of horses. Thanks to the support of horse lovers everywhere, it raised thousands of dollars for One Horse At A Time, helping hundreds of horses in need directly, and untold others indirectly through increased public awareness. Now that we have two calendars' worth of experience to draw upon, the 2014 version promises to be even more exciting, even more creative, and as always, inspirational and positive.

A Summer of Thoroughbreds. Colby: One Month Later

Colby: July 6, 2013
In June, I shared the story of Colby, a 4-year-old Thoroughbred gelding (click here to see intake photos and read about him) in the care of Helping Hearts Equine Rescue. My "summer of Thoroughbreds" has been so busy that I am just now finding time to share updated photos of Colby, taken on July 6.
Colby: May 25, 2013
What a difference a month makes!
Colby: July 6, 2013

Colby: July 6, 2013
As Colby get the nutrition he needs, he gains weight and muscle and his coat blooms. Gone are the long winter guard hairs, abscessed feet, and patchy coat. His rainrot and skin issues are under control with the help of medicated baths and daily grooming. He is fed supplements to help him maintain a healthy coat and hooves and support his young joints during his rehabilitation.
Colby: July 6, 2013
After Colby completed his quarantine, he was turned out with some equine friends. He is handled daily and receives training in hand, but his training under saddle will not begin until he is fully rehabilitated. In the meantime, he was quite happy to show off for me during a quick photo session.

He even showed off his potential when he cut across the arena and did an impromptu jump over the arena gate.

Colby looks great in July, but just wait until you see how he looks now. Stay tuned for more updates on this spirited youngster.

A Summer of Thoroughbreds... Colby's Story

I wish the month of May was 57 days long. There are not enough hours in the day to attend all the horse shows, races, and events that I want to see each year. On Memorial Day weekend, I visited Helping Hearts Equine Rescue in Perrineville, NJ and took some photos of the rescue's newest intake, an off-the-track Thoroughbred named Colby.

With a quick glance, you might guess that Colby is older than he really is. Although he is turning 4 in mid-June, his thin frame and the long guard hairs in his coat give him the look of a horse many times his actual age. Under his patchy coat lies a case of rainrot. His left knee is swollen, and he's recovering from a whopping hoof abscess.
As a newcomer to the rescue, Colby will spend 30 days in a quarantine stall and paddock. While he acclimates to the farm, his treatments and medical evaluations will begin. He will be evaluated by a veterinarian, dewormed, his rainrot will be treated, and he will be put into a specialized feeding program.

After quarantine ends, Colby will meet his fellow rescues, and spend time grazing, playing, and de-stressing in the farm's large pastures. When he's ready, his training evaluations will begin, and he will prepare to become an adoptable horse.
Colby's body tells the story of a difficult winter, but the sparkle in his eye and his baby-faced expression tell the story of his bright future. In the capable hands of Lisa Post and the rest of the Helping Hearts team, Colby will receive the rehabilitation and training that he needs to start his new life.

If you're interested in donating to the rescue for Colby's care, you can send a Paypal donation to hheartsequine@optonline.net, or visit the HHER website for other donation options. HHER is a 501(c)(3) charity, and horses like Colby are nursed back to health through the generosity of donations and the commitment of dedicated volunteers.

Please check back for new photos and updates about Colby, as well as other Thoroughbreds I meet this summer.

Sarah Andrew: 2012- A Year in Photos

Fuzzy winter profile

Happy New Year! Thank you so much for all of your support and for making 2012 such a memorable year.

On my road trips in 2012, I tried to put a face on the “unwanted” horse population, over 3,500 of them, wherever these horses were, from local rescues and farms to the horses at the auction. Each week, I met these horses and interacted with them. The horses continually surprised and inspired me.

I embarked on my second-annual fundraising project with my friend Gina Keesling from HoofPrints and together, we created Horses and Hope: Faces of Rescue, a 2013 calendar of our favorite rescue photos. Gina volunteered weeks of countless hours designing and producing these calendars. The final product was not a simple 12-month, 12-photo calendar, but was instead a masterpiece of inspirational quotes and over 100 photos. Although the photos could have easily created a gloomy tone, we worked hard to keep the theme positive and uplifting.

100% of the profit is donated to One Horse At A Time. OHAAT is an appropriate charity, since they are not a rescue that houses horses, but rather an organization that helps horses in need across the country. What I particularly like about OHAAT is their gelding grant program- how wonderful would it be for photos of our own rescue horses to help control the unwanted horse population? We raised over $40,000 with the proceeds from the 2012 calendar, and have already raised over $50,000 with the proceeds from the 2013 calendar!

My work was published in several books and a variety of web/print publications, and featured as album art for bands. Through the TDN, my freelance work, and my volunteer work, I've met some tremendous friends and colleagues. HUGE thanks to the folks at HRTV, who took the time to interview me and promote the Horses and Hope calendar- you can view the interview here.

And now… on to the photos!

My volunteer work has shaped my philosophy as a student of the horse and a photographer. A “horse in need” can take many forms, from a horse standing in a feedlot, to a free pony on Craigslist, to an abandoned pet, to a critical case at a rescue. Next time you are feeling frustrated, I challenge you to take some time and give back to your community. Photographers: craft your own style. BE DIFFERENT. You may think that you only have a little skill and time to donate, but as you continue to give, you may find that you are able to give more and more. The horses will thank you.
